It remains one of Steve Chitwood’s most vivid memories from his many years with the National Ski Patrol in his native Ohio. A teenage girl was missing; she had somehow become separated from the other students on the slopes that day. When they at last found her, she was badly injured, one leg nearly severed. Steve was one of the ones who stayed with her until the Medevac arrived. Her injuries were so severe that Steve wondered if he would ever see her back on the slopes. But sure enough, within 3 months she was back—on a bunny trail, to be sure, but her leg was intact and she was skiing once more.
A Sense of Gratification
Steve volunteered for 10 years with the National Ski Patrol, participating in hundreds of rescues. In many cases his actions saved a limb—or a life. To this day he considers it a great honor to have served. It was one of the most important decisions Steve has ever made—because it allowed him to be an active part of something that had a positive impact on the lives of others. As this talented professional sees it, life is all about making and honoring such commitments.
